Hamlet’s Sleeve
From the fall of 2008 until January of 2010, I created my Hamlet’s Sleeve collection of work inspired by historical clothing design.
In these ceramic vessels, I have taken forms and details from the history of clothing design rather than from the history of ceramic design. My research into historical clothing styles was a natural continuation of my investigation of art historical references.
Using the design details of one discipline to describe another brings a dimension to the work which can be unexpected and often humorous. This cross-breeding of art and design ideas results in vessels such as a gentleman’s coat which is also a vase, and a Dutch collar which is also a bowl.
I used both wheel-thrown and hand-built techniques, allowing each vessel to develop its unique character.
