STATEMENT
BEARING WITNESS
The Warrior Women started appearing in my work several years ago. I understand them as spiritual travelers, warriors of nonaggression who hear the cries of the world and bear witness to collective memory of struggles for justice and peace.
My forms pay homage to the unheard voices of all who struggle and reflect themes of connection and relationship. Women protecting and nurturing children are a recurring theme in my work and are strongly tied to my awareness of my mother's struggles as an immigrant.
Both bronze and ceramic go through fire and are marked uniquely, an appropriate metaphor for the marks of history affecting development and progeny.
I fire my clay sculpture at the Susan Beecher Noborigama kiln in upstate NY. We are a team of women wood firing as a community for many years. I am deeply grateful for these loving friendships that enrich my life and support my work.
