STATEMENT
The body is the central image in my work – its systems, its cycles, and its politics.
The female body, inside and out, is a minefield of gender politics. Using menstrual blood as paint and women's clothes as canvas, using my drawings of the body as shooting targets, are ways I have attempted to express the complexity of living in a female body.
The end of life and those rituals around the body, the many ways of thinking about death, the culmination of a life, the passage of time, all have a haunting combination of literalness and mystery for me. This permeates my work in the images I printed on old death certificates, the miniature burial grounds I sculpted, the letters I wrote to death, my own coffin that I built.
Now after many years of art making, I continue to find inspiration in the lived life of the body. This journey is a privilege, no matter where I find myself on that road, and I want to express that in my art.
